India Ivory (Arie) ?

Can you spot the difference ?

Many fans went into a frenzy after the left picture above of songwriter and singer India Arie’s promo picture for her new single “Cocoa Butter” was released. The hype started when fans noticed an unrecognizable India Arie who is notably known for her hit song “Brown Skin.” She appeared to look much lighter than usual on the cover of the picture. Considering that India’s lyrics promote self acceptance and beauty fans could not understand why she would want to bleach her skin.

However the singer denies any accusations of bleaching. Sources close to India Arie told TMZ that the criticism is ridiculous because the “lightened”skin is merely the product of the camera flash and angle. They also stated that the singer never asked to be lightened. Many people may agree but still wonder if the singer has the authority to approve the picture before it is published.

Just several months ago India Arie went into a tirade over the Nina Simone biopic skin color controversy. Zoe Saldana was selected to play Nina Simone in the film however Saldana’s characteristics and physical attribute didn’t sit well with Arie once the pictures for the film were released. She stated on Nina Simone’s website, “Yes there should be a movie made, and YES they should have chosen someone who LOOKS like Nina Simone, ESPECIALLY since her RACE played such a PIVOTAL role in WHO, WHAT and WHY, she was. THAT ASIDE for a second, this just looks WEIRD, it looks like a person in Black(er) face with a fake nose … REALLY?!!!!”

Issues pertaining to the skin in the African American community especially in the entertainment industry is not uncommon. Beyonce has been accused of lightening her skin on several occasions. Kelly Rowland recently spoke in an interview about accepting her brown skin and influencing Brandy to speak about her insecurities as a child. Other celebs who have been rumored to be bleaching over the years are endless, but we wont get into that. Another story another day. *Sips Tea*
